“Malmesbury Singers spring concert, directed by Iain Duffin, was held during Holy Week and featured a simply outstanding performance of J.S. Bach’s St John Passion with the Corelli Orchestra, (director Warwick Cole) and supported by accomplished soloists including internationally renowned tenor, Neil Jenkins, Evangelist. The role of Jesus was beautifully sung by Sam Young, and Phil Brotheridge was a stern and convincing Pilate. The other soloists, all of whom sang superbly were Hannah Davey (Soprano), Robert Jeffrey (Countertenor), Rupert Drury (Tenor).
As detailed in the programme notes the overarching structure, which underpins Bach’s Passion, can be ‘felt’, if not immediately seen or heard by the listener in the same way that the flying buttresses of Malmesbury Abbey are invisible when entering the Church.
The performance was a highly charged representation of the Passion of Christ with the choir responding to the direction of the conductor and was a truly uplifting experience. From start to finish this was a performance to be remembered and the Singers can be justifiably proud of their achievement.” – Review by Neil Medland.
Hannah Davey said: “The performance was very moving and I thought the choir were excellent.”
